Campbell University is a coeducational Baptist university in North Carolina, with the main campus located in the rural community of Buies Creek, which is a census-designated place, located in the Neills Creek Township of Harnett County, with a population of only 2, 215 inhabitants (2000), being incorporated by the North Carolina General Assembly, in 1903.
The university was founded in January, 1887, as a community school, first starting under the name of Buies Creek Academy, its present name being officially adopted on June 6, 1979, with the addition of Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, which moved to a new campus in the state capital of Raleigh, in 2009.
Campbell offers more than 100 concentrations and tracks, including master’s programs in education, business, clinical research and divinity, pharmaceutical science, as well as professional programs in pharmacy and law. It has an approximately equal number of female and male students, and it consciously promotes the application and awareness of Christian principles.
The athletic teams from Campbell are known as Campbell Fighting Camels, which compete in 18 varsity sports in the NCAA Division I, as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, for most sports. The football team competes in the Pioneer Football League, as of 2008, and the men’s wrestling team competes in the Colonial Athletic association. The Camels are best known for their achievements in basketball, in both men’s and women’s.
